Melatonin is an endogenous messenger substance, which is mainly formed from the messenger serotonin in the epiphysis, also called pineal gland or pituitary gland. The source of serotonin is the aromatic amino acid tryptophan. L-tryptophan itself is an essential amino acid that needs to be supplied to the body via food or dietary supplements because the body cannot build tryptophan by itself.
