The essential vitamin B12

The vitamin B12 takes over numerous functions in your body! Therefore, it must be ensured that the sufficient daily requirement is covered. Vitamin B12 naturally occurs in foods.

However, absorbable vitamin B12 is found only in animal products - especially the heart, liver or kidney. But also eggs and milk contain B12. Vegetable foods contain vitamin B12 only in small quantities. Accordingly, especially vegetarians and vegans are at risk of inadequate vitamin B12 supply. When preparing food, part of the vitamin B12 is usually lost from the diet.

Immediate effect - B12 as lozenges

Make sure that the vitamin B12 you consume is really available to your body! The bioavailability of vitamin B12 via the oral mucosa is particularly high. If free vitamin B12 - such as methylcobalamin - taken orally, it can be quickly absorbed and used through the oral mucosa. Therefore, it is more beneficial to take the vitamin through the mouth!

B12 in capsule form only slightly available

Bioavailability tells you how well your body can absorb nutrients. Among other things, this is decisive, which are supplied to the body and how the organism can use this.

Vitamin B12 is very well absorbed through the oral mucosa. The other way - intake through the gut - is much harder. As a result, only a small amount of B12 is really absorbed when taken in capsule or tablet form. Absorption via the gastrointestinal tract may be passive by diffusion processes or actively by means of transport proteins “intrinsic factor”.

The "intrinsic factor" is a very special transport protein that is formed in the stomach. However, the intrinsic factor is only produced in limited quantities, which is why vitamin B12 is only really absorbed in small quantities. It is estimated that only about 1.5 μg vitamin B12 per meal can be absorbed via the intrinsic factor.

Vitamin B12 deficiency

Vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms usually appear only years after the actual deficiency prevailed. A deficiency of vitamin B12 is shown at the beginning mainly in general fatigue symptoms. For example:

If you are vegetarian or vegan, you know that you have an increased need for vitamin B12. This interrelation is well known. About 10 percent of Germans do not eat meat.However, it is less well known that many other factors can influence the development of vitamin B12 deficiency.First, certain drugs inhibit vitamin B12 absorption by the body. These include, among others, metformin (a drug for the treatment of diabetes), birth control pills or drugs for the neutralisation of gastric acid –the so-called antacids.But even the most natural aging affects how much vitamin B12 the body absorbs. With age, the body's ability to absorb vitamin B12 also decreases. In addition, vitamin B12 is sensitive to heat. Those who fry meat containing B12 will destroy a large part of the B12 content. Also, the milk we drink is often heated through pasteurisation and thus contains less vitamin B12.
